Why are we so fascinated with trains and railroading? I have a few reasons that are related: Full size trains are massive! They are among the most massive machines built by man that travel long distances at speed, and we can watch them speed by at close range (but not too close!). They are the most efficient in transporting goods and people. They are not steered by the driver, but by two ribbons of steel strong enough to support their weight but of so much less mass and size than the train itself. Trains go only where people lay tracks to take them. People can ride in them in comfort and with elbow room, even room to walk around in. Model railroads can be purchased and built so that their owners can make trains move from going around in circles (or ovals) to being operated just as the real railroads are, with predetermined origins and destinations. Can you think of more reasons to be fascinated by trains?
